Christmas is almost here! I simply cannot wait to see the look on my toddler’s face when he sees all the presents under the tree.

I don’t think W remembers much from last year. We’ve been talking to him about Santa coming, but I’m not sure if he truly knows what’s to come.

He has spent the days since we’ve put up our tree placing random things under it… the remote control, coasters, his shoe that I spent twenty minutes searching all over the house for, etc.

He also absolutely LOVES opening up presents. Who doesn’t? I let him “help” wrap a gift for my dad the other day. He was so proud of himself. He wanted to carry that present around with him everywhere. As the day went by, I noticed he couldn’t help but slowly tear at the paper.

Let’s just say, I’ll be wrapping that present again.

With Christmas fast approaching a lot of us are scrambling around finishing up last minute preparations. We’re headed for the store for those last few gifts, gathering essentials for yummy Christmas dinners, baking cookies, and wrapping presents.  A toddler and a baby do not make things any easier.

I shared some last minute toddler Christmas fun last week, so I thought I’d expand on one of my ideas this week. It’s called What’s In The Christmas Stocking? It’s a super simple, fun game that’s sure to keep your toddler entertained.

What you’ll need:

  • A few mini Christmas stockings (You can use your empty Christmas stockings if you want OR use some of those partnerless socks you have in a basket on top of the dryer)
  • A few Christmas themed items, here are some examples…
    • a jingle bell
    • a Christmas ornament
    • a Christmas cookie
    • a candy cane
    • a paper snowflake
    • a mini Nutcracker or santa figurine
    • a pinecone

How to play:

  1. Put the Christmas themed items inside the stockings.
  2. Have your toddler try to guess what’s inside by only using his sense of touch, smell, and hearing. You could also let your toddler ask you questions for clues.
  3. Then, reverse the roles. Have your toddler hide the toys and let you try to guess.
  4. After a few rounds, you can leave your toddler with the stockings and Christmas-themed items for some imaginative, independent play. W loved hiding things in the stockings!

This game is an awesome way to help your child build vocabulary, practice their inference skills and use their senses. It’s super simple to put together, and small enough to take with you on the go. It’s also a fun game for a bunch of children to play together- perfect for a Christmas gathering with relatives!
