Crafts for Toddlers: Felt Cornucopia

Truthfully, I can’t stand sewing.

I don’t think I have the patience for it. Plus, the room always gets so messy- thread tangled up everywhere, pieces of fabrics littered on my floor and hidden needles ready to poke me when I least expect it.

Needless to say, W does not receive many  any hand sewn projects.

Just try to imagine a toddler in that scene.

Yet, as I was scrolling through pinterest the other day, I came across a craft for toddlers pin that I just had to try.

W loves to put things in and out of pockets and containers, so a felt cornucopia would be a great distraction while I prepare for Thanksgiving.

Here is the pin I came across that sparked my sudden enthusiasm for sewing. Isn’t it cute (The pin originated from Play Create Explore)?

I am always looking for ideas to keep W busy (Here’s another idea to keep your toddler occupied).

I liked that this felt cornucopia was super easy to make and very entertaining for W. It was also a great tool for working on food words and colors.

Quite frankly, even the sewing process was fascinating to W. He loved playing with all of the thread and different colored pieces of felt. I think we may do more sewing projects together after all!

What you’ll need:

  • Multiple colors of felt (red, orange, yellow, green, brown, tan, purple)
  • thread
  • sewing needle
  • scissor
  • Cornucopia Template
  • stuffing (I used stuffing from an old stuffed animal that my dog decapitated)
  • sewing machine* (Another reason I can’t stand sewing- the sewing machine. It’s such a pain to take out and wind the bobbin that I decided it would be easier for me to do it by hand).

Instructions:

  1. Print out the templates. Honestly, I just did it free hand since our printer ran out of ink.
  2. Cut out templates and use them to trace felt pieces.
  3. Cut out felt pieces, sew them closed and don’t forget to add a little stuffing before you sew them completely closed.
  4. Voila! You have yourself an easy craft to occupy your toddler for hours!
