It’s like I’m in hibernation. I’m a little jealous of those bears and all that sleeping they do!
Most people get in an exercise funk every now and then. The challenge is to avoid letting the funk take over. You decide to forgo a run one day because the weather is cold, then the next thing you know you are counting the steps you take to get to the fridge as exercise.
I always remind myself that even a little bit counts. You do not have to run three miles every day to stay fit.
Researches from UNSW found that women in their study lost three times as much weight doing shorter, interval training than those exercising for a longer period of time at a continuous pace.
So, even though I absolutely despise the dreaded treadmill, I decided 20 minutes couldn’t possibly be so bad.
Simple 20 Minute Treadmill Workout
Since I am not the biggest fan of treadmill running, I did some research on ways to make it more enjoyable. I know I could always just throw on some cold weather gear and head outside, but sometimes it’s just WAY too cold (or there’s ice on the ground).
Here are some other posts I found that may encourage you to jump on that treadmill.
- You don’t always have to run on the treadmill. Try not to break your neck with some of these clever exercises that’ll certainly make your treadmill workout less boring.
- Avoid injury with a few tips. Read about the 10 treadmill mistakes you may be making over at Prevention.
- Take the dread out of the treadmill. Sparkpeople has some ideas for making treadmill running an enjoyable experience. I really like the idea of “racing” someone!
For those of you interested in purchasing a treadmill, we really like the LifeSpan TR 1200i Folding Treadmill. It wasn’t too pricey, and it gets the job done! It was really easy to put together and it runs very smooth and quiet.
Now check out my simple 20 minute treadmill workout. Mix and match the incline and speed to what you are comfortable. I like doing different versions of this so I’m never bored.

Wait, the steps to the fridge don’t count as a workout?! LOL. These are some great ideas. I’m definitely in a workout funk. The cold, snowy weather doesn’t help. Thanks for the inspiration!

We used to have a treadmill, but we had to get rid of it because we just didn’t have the room for it. I actually liked it, and its presence just reminded me that I should get a few minutes of workout in. Now your post is making me rethink it and see if we could make some room somewhere to have a treadmill around.

Ai, our treadmill actually folds up. I have’t tried it yet, but I know it says it does on the directions. There are other small treadmills that can be folded too so they don’t take up as much room.

We got a treadmill, set it up in the garage, and it’s never been used :/ My hubby thought he’d use it out there where it’s cooler, but it hasn’t happened. I’m not sure we’d do any better if it was in the house though. I really need to start working out. My jeans are feeling a bit tighter than they were at the beginning of winter!

Lauren, my husband likes to use the treadmill in the morning. I’ve been finding it’s nice when my son is sleeping and I just want to get a quick workout in. These short workouts are helping me get out of the winter funk!

I love the idea of treadmill workouts but every time I start one I always end up back on the elliptical lol…..
Oh, see I’m not very good on the elliptical. haha My legs always lock and I’m always afraid I’m going to go flying. I’m sure this workout will work just as well on the elliptical!

This is really helpful! Ever since I got a Fitbit, I’ve been obsessed with counting steps. Even though I’m not a treadmill fan, I can do these and not get bored. Thanks for the format.

I had a jawbone up before (it broke) and I was obsessed with counting my steps. The nice thing about our treadmill is that it actually keeps track of your steps. I find shorter workouts help keep me not so bored on the treadmill.

Great 20 minute workout! I hate the treadmill – or what I like to call the “Dreadmill” haha. But whenever I’m on it I absolutely have to switch it up. I usually do 1 minute intervals of shuffling side to side mixed with some running and power walking on an incline. And don’t beat yourself up over the loss of motivation, it happens to us ALL!
This article is great. Just pinned it…. Will follow and try all the steps
I’m getting a treadmill soon I’m so freaking excited 🎉 2023 time to focus on me and take care of me from head to toes ❤
I used to be a treadmill hater too, but over time, I’ve learned to appreciate the benefits it offers. One of the things that helped me was incorporating interval training into my treadmill workouts. By changing the pace and incline at regular intervals, I found that the monotony was broken, and it made the workout more engaging and challenging. It’s a great way to build speed and endurance.
