A Simple Toddler Activity- Making Frozen Fruit Kabobs

My toddler was having a difficult time a few weeks ago. He was cranky, whiny, not his usual happy, carefree self. I figured the Terrible Twos had arrived early.

It wasn’t until I noticed him grinding his teeth that I thought something else might be at play. W only seems to grind his teeth whenever new teeth come in. I stuck my hand in his mouth, felt his gums, and, sure enough, two bottom molars had appeared.

I have been warned that the two-year molars can be tough. It’s understandable. They are big teeth. I would be shocked if they didn’t hurt at least a little as they broke through the skin.

Though we did get through the bottom molars relatively unscathed, we still have the remaining two to go.

Since it’s summertime, I thought gnawing on frozen foods would be a great way to help ease some of the pain for W. My first thought was to make popsicles! There are a million delicious-looking popsicle recipes on Pinterest.

Then again, popsicles seemed like such a hassle with all the blending and cleaning of the blender. I guess pregnancy has made me lazy.

So, what’s a tasty teething treat I can whip up with almost no effort at all? Frozen Fruit Kabobs!

Yes, frozen fruit kabobs are beyond easy to put together- even your toddler can do it! I decided to turn a simple teething treat into a fun activity for W.

W had a blast with this color matching activity. As a teacher I always loved activities that are both entertaining and teach a lesson.

What you’ll need:

  • Colored popsicle sticks (you could also draw a different colored dot on plain sticks)
  • A variety of fruit

How to play:

  • Demonstrate to your toddler how to match the fruit with the appropriate colored popsicle stick. Then, let them have fun!
  • WARNING: They may eat all of the fruit before you have the opportunity to freeze.

Hopefully you set aside some of that fruit to make the frozen fruit kabobs. If your toddler is anything like W, then all the fruit will be consumed by the end of the activity! You can add whatever fruit you’d like. You don’t even have to stick to fruit. I added some cucumber because W loves them so much (I can’t help but sneak in a few veggies whenever I can).
